Lejos de restar relevancia a la Biblia, entender la situación en la que fue dada nos ayuda a hacerla más relevante (algunas veces hasta incómodamente relevante). Nos obliga a ver que las personas con quienes trató Pablo no eran simplemente conflictivas y moralmente inestables; eran personas de carne y hueso que vivían una realidad similar a la nuestra. Para entender y aplicar bien la Biblia, necesitamos dos recursos fundamentales de información: uno es la Biblia en sí misma, el otro es una comprensión del contexto cultural del pasaje que estamos leyendo. Jesús (en Mateo 6:7, 8) nos dice que no debemos orar como los paganos. Pero, ¿cómo oraron los paganos? “Las oraciones griegas sumaban la mayor cantidad de títulos posibles que tenía la deidad a la cual se oraba, esperando con esto asegurar su atención. Típicamente, las oraciones paganas recordaban a la deidad los favores que uno había hecho o los sacrificios ofrecidos, intentando obtener una respuesta del dios sobre una base contractual. Jesús basa la oración eficaz en una relación de intimidad, no en un modelo de asociación comercial, el cual estaba más cercano al que seguía el paganismo antiguo”. ¿Por qué Santiago (en Santiago 2:6) asegura que los ricos oprimen a los pobres y los arrastran a los tribunales? “Las leyes en los tribunales romanos siempre favorecían a los ricos, quienes podían iniciar demandas en contra de las clases inferiores, aunque estas últimas no podían hacer lo mismo contra los ricos... como en la mayoría de las culturas, la gente pudiente naturalmente tiene ventajas legales. Ellos pueden presentar sus casos de manera más articulada o emplear a otros para que lo hagan por ellos”.
